The Mazda Mazda6: 17 Years as BC's Top Midsize Sedan

The first-generation Mazda6 erupted onto Japan’s automotive scene in the spring of 2002 as the Mazda Atenza. The midsize sedan quickly gained attention for its stylish, insightful, and spirited design philosophy – and North Americans were clamouring to experience the four-door’s fun-to-drive personality.

In 2004, the first Mazda6 zoom-zoomed onto Canadian roads – and since then, this stylish sedan has spawned three generations, while also earning multiple accolades and awards for its segment-leading performance.

Here is a deeper look into the history of the Mazda6, which has enjoyed nearly two decades as one of BC’s best midsize sedans.

The Mazda6 Brings Performance to BC

First-generation Mazda6 sedans made headlines with their powerful engine options, including a 160-hp 2.3L four-cylinder and a 220-hp 3.0L V6. Delivering a sporty driving experience, the Mazda6 shook up the family sedan class with its superb ride and handling. The 2004 Mazda6 also garnered considerable praise for its athletic performance and its available four-speed automatic transmission with manual shift sport mode. On the podium, the Mazda6 went on to be named the Best Family Vehicle by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) during its introductory year.

The Mazda6 Brings Comfort to BC

In 2009, the Mazda6 underwent a full redesign, delivering more space and comfort to drivers and passengers alike. Boasting upsized dimensions, the second-generation Mazda6 became one of the most accommodating midsize sedans in its class with 96.5 cm of legroom for back-seat passengers and 470L of cargo space. It was also a segment winner for the Best Family Car ($22K-30K) for the 2009 Canadian Car of the Year awards. Today you’ll still find generous dimensions inside the 2021 Mazda6, including additional comfort-focused features, such as supportive front seats, standard dual-zone climate control, and available leather-trimmed seating with ventilation.

The Mazda6 Brings Efficiency to BC

For its third generation, Mazda introduced the 2014 Mazda6, which went on to win AJAC’s Canadian Car of the Year award. This model year also unveiled Mazda’s newest crown jewel – a 189-hp direct-injection 2.5L inline four-cylinder SkyActiv engine, which achieved 8.1 L/100km city and 5.3 L/100km highway. Mazda incorporated idling stop technology into the third-generation Mazda6, which conserved fuel by automatically stopping and starting the engine when the sedan was static in traffic. Nowadays, 2021 models are available with a more powerful 250-hp turbocharged 2.5L inline four-cylinder SkyActiv engine, which returns a very respectable 10 L/100km city and 7.5 L/100km highway.

Test Drive a Mazda6 in BC

The Mazda6 has earned plenty of recognition for its premium design, performance, quality, and safety, helping to shape the Mazda brand throughout the sedan's three generations. The 2021 model year marks the end of production for the Mazda6, but its legacy will live on as consistently one of the best nameplates in its segment – and in BC.
